Built during the 23rd year of the reign of Jiacing in the Cing dynasty (A.D. 1818), the Jingzaijiao Tiled Salt Fields were formerly known as Laidong Salt Fields.The site was originally a barren desert. Lying on the sandy beach is a small sand dune, where underground water gushes out from low-lying ground forming a well-like structure. The name, Jiingzaijiao, was essentially derived from this particular landscape formation.

This largest Confucius temple in Taiwan is modeled after Song Dynasty architecture. The temple features magnificent archways and copper wall reliefs depicting the life of the ancient sage. Ancient Confucian ceremonies are still conducted in its halls on a regular basis. When not in use, the ritual implements and musical instruments that are used in these ceremonies are on display in their store rooms at the temple.

Taroko Gorge offers spectacular sights. Created by tectonic movement and erosion by the Liwu River, the marble gorge rises high and close, embodying nature in all its power. Other famous spots include the Tunnel of Nine Turns, Swallow Grotto, Zhuilu Precipice, Eternal Spring Shrine, Mother Bridge, and the Tianxiang Mesa.
The Tunnel of Nine Turns is an area of surpassing beauty. After the Zhuilu Cliff, Taroko Gorge winds along a serpentine path that is echoed by the highway that sharply curves through tunnels above. This area is as much a scenic attraction as it is an engineering marvel.
